The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

It has been impossible to identify any Arthur Bailey having a direct contact with Yarm. However as his name is on both the War Memorial and the Methodist Church Memorial this suggests he was known locally and his name is left on the record.

Yarm1914 research suggests from the census records an Arthur Bailey was born in 1888 at Picton Junction to William and Hannah Bailey. William was a platelayer for the NER and the family lived in Railway Cottages near the station. Arthur had several sisters but Emily born in 1883 was the only one living with her parents in 1891. Hannah died in 1902 and in 1904 Emily married Alfred James Bunter, a railway worker. By 1911 William, now retired, had moved in with the Bunters at 19 Hutton Street in Hartlepool and Arthur had joined the army. He was killed in action on 9th May 1915.

The family appeared to be Anglican as they had daughters Emily baptised on 20th January 1984 and Ellen baptised on 6 July 1879 at Kirklevington. The nearest methodist church is in Yarm, which could provide a credible explanation for the memorial if Arthur or one of his sisters married or became a methodist. The inclusion in the Parish Church implies that a member of family lived in yarm and possibly worshiped in St Mary Magdalene church.

There is another explanation: The census for 1901 records a boarder Arthur East aged 3 living with the Baileys. By 1911 the name had changed to Arthur Bailey aged 13. Arthur was not baptised in Kirklevington, unlike his elder and younger sister. It is possible that Arthur was adopted and his real mother or father living in Yarm, registered their son for the various memorials.
